Apply for a Passport

How to apply for a German passport or identity card: appointment, documents, costs and collection.

⏰ 4-6 Wochen 💰 37,50-70 € 📋 5 steps
Steps overview
  1. 1
Schedule an appointment at the Bürgeramt
Schedule an online appointment at the responsible Bürgeramt/Einwohnermeldeamt. In major cities, waiting times can be several weeks.
💡 Book the appointment as early as possible. In many cities, you can book appointments online on the city's website.
  2. 2
    Prepare documents
Required: old passport/identity card, current registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), birth certificate. For name change: marriage certificate or divorce decree.
💡 Check in advance on your city's website which documents are exactly needed — requirements vary.
  3. 3
    Biometric passport photo
Have a current biometric passport photo taken (35×45mm, frontal view, neutral facial expression). Cost: approx. 8-15€ at a photo studio.
💡 Many Bürgeramt offices have a photo booth in front of the building. Ask beforehand.
  4. 4
    Submit your application
Appear in person at your appointment with all documents. Fingerprints are recorded digitally. Fees: identity card 37.50€ (under 24: 22.80€), passport 70€ (under 24: 37.50€).
💡 Payment is usually only possible by EC card — don't bring cash.
  5. 5
    Collect your document
After 4-6 weeks you will receive a notification (by post or online). Collect the passport/document in person. Express passport (3 business days) costs an additional 32€.
💡 Don't plan trips too tightly — during peak times it can take longer than 6 weeks.
