Can I work while my Blue Card application is being processed?

I received a job offer from a company in Germany and applied for a Blue Card. The processing time is apparently 4-8 weeks. Can I start working while waiting for the Blue Card, or do I need to wait until I have it in hand?

It depends on your current visa status. If you entered Germany with a job-seeker visa or a national visa (D-visa) that allows employment, you can typically start working once you have the Fiktionsbescheinigung from the Ausländerbehörde. This is a temporary certificate that confirms your residence permit application is being processed. Contact your local Ausländerbehörde to get one. If you entered on a Schengen tourist visa, you generally cannot work until the Blue Card is issued.
