Is the Integrationskurs worth it or should I learn German privately?

I got a letter from the Ausländerbehörde saying I should attend an Integrationskurs. Its 600 hours of German + 100 hours Orientierungskurs. Is it worth the time or am I better off learning with a private tutor or online courses?

The Integrationskurs is actually a great deal:

  • Cost: Only 2,29€ per lesson (229€ per module). If you pass the B1 test, you get 50% back. If you receive Bürgergeld, its completely free.
  • Certificate: The B1 certificate from the Integrationskurs is officially recognized for Niederlassungserlaubnis and Einbürgerung.
  • Orientierungskurs: The 100h culture/politics part is required for many visa types — you cant skip it.
  • If the Ausländerbehörde sent you the letter: You are likely REQUIRED to attend. Not going could affect your residence permit.

My advice: Do the Integrationskurs AND supplement with private learning (apps like Anki, watching German TV, language tandems). The course alone wont make you fluent, but the certificate is very valuable for your legal status.
