From Kita-Gutschein to waiting list — here's how to find a childcare spot for your child.

Since 2013, children from their 1st birthday have a legal right to childcare. If denied: file an objection with the Jugendamt. Legal protection insurance is recommended.
Apply for Kita-Gutschein / Betreuungsgutschein Required

At the Jugendamt or online (depending on city). In Hamburg: Kita-Gutschein system. In Berlin: Kita-Gutschein. Submit application about 6 months before desired start date. Fees depend on income.
Search for Kitas nearby and visit them Required
Kindertagesstätte (Kita)
Online portals: kita-navigator.de, little bird, kitanetz.de. Attend open house days. Check the child-to-staff ratio, pedagogy (Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio), and opening hours.
Get on waiting lists (multiple Kitas!) Required

IMPORTANT: Register at least 5-10 Kitas! High demand in major cities. Registration possible from birth. Showing interest and following up helps.
Prepare documents (U-Heft, vaccination record, birth certificate) Required

Child health examination booklet (U-Heft), vaccination record (measles vaccination mandatory since 2020!), birth certificate, possibly residence permit. Measles vaccination proof is REQUIRED for Kita admission.

Tagesmutter / Kindertagespflege
Smaller groups (max. 5 children), often more flexible hours. Arranged through Jugendamt. Costs comparable to Kita. Tagesmutter must have childcare license.
Plan adjustment period (2-6 weeks) Required
Eingewöhnung / Berliner Modell
Berlin model or Munich model. Parent stays initially, then gradual separation. Take time off work for this!
